The Unique Book Stock (UBS) Program

A Cooperative Association Between Authors’ Publishing House(APH)And Selected Book Stores

A Brief Background:

During the past few years, several authors have self-published their books, or had their writing products printed under Print-On-Demand (POD) or self publishing arrangements with local printers or “vanity” publishers.

Most, if not all, of the marketing activities for these books were left to the author. According to most authors, results are less than exciting or successful.

Many authors find themselves with large quantities of unsold books in their attics, basements, garages or rental spaces.

While most of these books have not been submitted to a thorough and rigorous reading, line editing and post edit revision scrutiny, some of these books are well-written, and seem to sell well in regional locations.

An Opportunity Exists:

The Authors’ Publishing House (APH) and Selected Book Stores have developed the Unique Book Stock (UBS) Program to help selected authors promote and sell their books.

Each selected retail location determines who, among their consignment authors, is the best, as measured by the author’s writing style and/or the best in book sales.

Recommended authors are contacted by APH representatives to determine the author’s interest in participating in the UBS Program.

Authors selected for the UBS Program now have the opportunity to sell their “back room” stock, as well as participate in more traditional publishing ventures for their future books.

The Procedure Works Like This:

Each book store location determines their “best” regional author and submits the appropriate contact information to Authors’ Publishing House (APH). The author is contacted by APH representatives and the UBS Program is explained to the author in detail.

Each book being considered for the UBS Program will be read by a committee of APH-contracted market readers.  These readers complete a questionnaire about the book. APH creates a composite of these comments, which is the guide to selecting or rejecting books for the UBS Program.

Poorly written books, or books of questionable taste will not be approved by APH, nor passed onto the selected locations for approval, prior to being placed in selected point of sale locations.

A copy of each book being considered for the UBS Program, along with Summary Comments from APH Market Readers will be submitted to the approval “mechanism” (either individual or committee) for final approval, prior to being placed in selected retail locations.

Once the approval is received, the author signs a contract giving APH first option to publish the book(s) in question, after the original stock is depleted.

Should a republishing of the book(s) occur, normal distribution channels will be used exclusively by APH.

Because of this special arrangement with the selected book stores, only three parties are involved in the financial arrangements for sold books:

  • The point of sale
  • The author
  • Authors’ Publishing House (we act as book distributor, mailing source and financial controller)
